Adventures in Protein

My adventures in growing out my hair was cut short yesterday (HA) when I cut it pretty short again.

When I’m really lacking protein my hair seems to want to fall out. I begin shedding like the family pet. My husband suggested I cut it short again. Now you may be thinking “Your hair was shoulder length” but if you know me that was me growing it out. I really wanted long hair. I even curled it about three weeks ago and loved how it looked. Now I’m back to headbands and bobby pins.

Due to the setback in my quest to have long beautiful hair it’s time I live somewhat like I did the first year after my Gastric Bypass. I’ve stocked up on my new best friend “Protein”. Back to the 25 grams of protein shots, Protein smoothies, etc. Protein, Veggies, and Fruit all my dining needs.

I have to remember that having Gastric Bypass as a result of having PCOS means that I will malnourish easily if I don’t eat right and take vitamins daily. I’m not unique and will need to do this the rest of my life. When I start thinking I’m unique things like my hair falling out starts to happen. I get very tired and weak and bruise easy. You’d think experiencing the bad side effects would make me eat right and take my vitamins daily. However; I’m not perfect, far from it and I hope that this time I remember a little better and stick to taking care of me. So far Day 1 is going great!! Stay tuned. I’m going to post weekly on the adventures of being good to me in all areas of my life.

  1. Kathy, I’m a vegan, who is. and always has been extremely anemic. I have “baby hair”, that falls out at the drop of a hat, if I ever, at all betray my normal. diet. I have found great success with a cocktail of B12, LOTS of greens (iron works great to allow your body to assimilate amino acids… not spinach, though…collards, kale, etc.), and vegetable proteins, like, tempeh (fermented soy is more body friendly than animal… it absorbs more effectively), and… whole grains, like quinoa and teff. seriously, no more bruising, no more hair fallout. I swear. My hair even stayed on my head during my last pregnancy on this diet… and anyone who’s had a baby knows, it’s totally LEACHING!

    1. Thanks Erin! I do my vitamins in liquid form. I really need to keep up on them. I don’t absorb nutrients through food especially iron since I don’t have the first two feet of my intestines. However I love quinoa and kale. They have become a regular part of what I eat. The gastric bypass saved my life but in some ways is now a pain. With my pregnancy this last time I was under the care of a Cardiologist. Didn’t know being super anemic could shrink your heart. My long term iron is at 2 and I’m working to raise it. I’d love to hear some of the things you love for protein.
