The boy is basically potty trained, on his own. We tried the Potty Training Jar and that worked for a week or so but he kept going pee without any kind of reward. It was a bit of heaven.
The snag in this training that I’m seeing more and more online is that they are all willing to pee in the potty but not poo in the potty…really??
I’ve googled “Are boys afraid to poo when potty training?” and I’ve come to find that they are. I’ve also learned from my 3.5 year old son yesterday that (a) His poop makes him crazy and (b) His poop keeps him warm. So I’ve decided we can cover his legs with a blanket. He’ll get tired of that too. Here are some other suggestions I’ve been given via the internet (I’m about to stop moms on the street and get their advice):
- Give him cars to play with while he’s sitting on the potty.
- Put a picture of another kid on the potty (not sure how this will work)
- Rewards of money.
- Rewards of candy.
- Rewards of toys.
- Have a toy chest near the potty for him to pick a toy.
- Have a library of books next to the potty
- etc.
So here’s the deal. Call me a mean mom but I don’t want him in a pull up when he has to poo. He asks me for one each time. I’d much rather toss a pair of superman underwear and clean him up because I feel he’ll get sick of the feeling BUT if it keeps him warm that’s another story.
In the end I’m going to look for books on Pooing in the Potty. We’ve mastered peeing and he’s dry all night, asks to use the potty when we are out, etc.
I tried explaining last night that his poop helps the plants outside and fertilizes them. OK it’s not true BUT it kept his attention for a bit.
What did or do you do as a mother to help a little boy not be afraid of the evil poo?
