Today is Rosh Hashanah. My children are culturally Jewish. In Judaism, the mother being Jewish makes the child Jewish, and well, I’m not Jewish. However, their father is Jewish and they’ve been raised in a Jewish home.
Like any good divorced family (OK, the ones that don’t have to battle over children), we divide between Jewish and non-Jewish holidays. They are always with me for Christmas Eve, Christmas, and Easter, and they’re always with their father for the Jewish holidays.
Based on the current state of America and because of the disdain for the Jewish people, it does worry me a little to have my son today in temple with his father. Yes, there will be a lot of security where they are attending, but there shouldn’t be security for any group of people to practice their religion. It is not just the Jewish people in fear to practice their faith. Churches, Mosques, and other places, such as schools, are targets for those who don’t feel a group of people deserves to live.
So, for today, I hope that my son and daughter, their father and his family, as well as all those celebrating the Jewish New Year, have a beautiful day and celebrate in peace.
